YELLOWGLEN RED

Monday, May 19th, 2008

VariousSparkling red - Barely understood, but the converts stay converted. This is a light sparkling wine, with rich, soft red licorice and musk stick fruit flavours, softened with the ever present bubbles. It sounds like bad marketing spiel, but every Australian should try Sparkling red at some time in their life- A distinctly Australian, utterly misunderstood, but beguiling style that perplexes with the contrasting richness of a full flavoured red wine base, mischeviously sandwiched underneath some perky, frivolous bubbles. The Yellowglen red is the L Plater of the splurgundy world - simple, honest and light. Easy to understand, enjoyably soft & fruity and priced accordingly.

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

(Barossa Valley, SA)Yalumba D Black 1999 ‘Judges choice – Sparkling red - A genuine grand-daddy with inky black fruits and long garnet beads. The nose is all spicy malt-whisky peats plus a does of prune and anise. Fantale-like caramels and chocolates with earthy, leather nuances and drying tannins to hold up the sweet, rich fruit cake. Stunning.” Tony Love, Best of the best, The Advertiser, September 6, 2006′Yalumba has refined its sparkling cabernet shiraz into a soft, rich style that is not too sweet, nor youthfully tannic.’ Huon Hooke, Good Living, October 21, 2003

SEPPELT ORIGINAL SPARKLING SHIRAZ 2002

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Various Vineyards, SAThis is a standard reference for wine lovers of sparkling red. It has always been affordable and consistent in quality. The 2002 is a touch drier than examples from previous vintages, and that’s not a bad thing, making the wine more suitable to have with a meal rather than simply being an aperitif wine. Excellent mauve white mousse. Fine very peresistent bead. Opaque crimson colour. The nose displays nuances of plum, spice and earth. The palate has generous mouth feel with plum, spice, black pepper and subtle earthy flavours emerging. Very good length, clean acid finish. Cellar 4-5 years (2008-2009)
