TERRA FELIX SHIRAZ VIOGNIER 2005

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

(Upper Goulburn Valley, Vic) Produced from the Tallarook vineyards (Sensational Hornfels blocks) and other Central Victorian producers. It is classical co-fermentation of Viognier pressings with destemmed Shiraz (Cote Rotie style) after Viognier juice free run is separated off. Portions of Shiraz have seen micro- oxygenation, low level French Oak for 4-5 months and put through malolactice qualities of the Viognier which form together to make a seamless palate. The wine finishes with peppery notes and lingering smooth tannins. The penguin Wine of the year - Best Value Red Wine.’How do they get so much charmingly flavorsome, beautifully balanced, stylish red wine into a bottle and onto a shelf so cheaply? At this is a tremendous bargain. Made by Trina Smith and grown on the Tallarook vineyards near Seymour.’ The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2007 **** Don’t Buy Wine Without Me 2007 - Best Value Red Wine’This is a dead-set belter and if you know me you know it is the highest praise I can deliver. The Terra Felix family has some connection to a young chap called Felix who plays in a band called The Cat Empire who played at the commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. That has nothing to do with how good the wine is, except to say that if it had run in the Commonwealth Games marathon it would have won by an hour.’ Stuart Gregor, Don’t Buy Wine Without Me 2007 *****

HAPPS ‘PF’ RED 2005 - 100% Preservative Free

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Margaret River, WANotes from HappsThe sheer joy of ripe, red grapes, brilliant, bright, burgundy purple plums, currants and blackberries. The Blend: PF Red is a blend of good stuff like Pinot Noir, Merlot, the Cabernets, Franc and Sauvignon and sometimes Shiraz. The really essential ingredient, for the sake of early drinking, is the Pinot Noir.Colour: A full purple reminds one of ecclesiastical robes.Aroma: Plums, currants, red berries.Palate: Fresh and generous berry flavours riffling over the palate, savoury, elegant, intriguing, with a soft finish. Early in its life the aroma of fermentation is part of the whole but the berry flavours soon take over.Life: PF Red will hold its condition in bottle as well as any wine with ‘preservative’. A minimum of five years may be expected. A recent tasting of all our PF Reds since 94 confirmed the point. There is little to be gained however in cellaring it beyond 4 years of age. It is not our aim to produce such a wine, rather, to produce a wine that can be consumed with satisfaction from release.

DEVILS LAIR FIFTH LEG RED 2005

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Margaret River, WA)’A delicious young and early-drinking red packed with genuinely ripe but not overcooked flavours of dark berries, cherries and plums. Its bouquet has a floral aspect, with undertones of dark chocolate/cedar oak and nuances of dried herbs. Medium to full in weight, its fruit-driven palate is framed by very fine, dusty tannins. It finishes long and lingering with fresh dark fruit and lively acidity. (Margaret River, retail, approx., 90 points, drink 2007-2010)’ Jeremy Oliver’A blend of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot with a dog playing cricket with one of the legs from the Devils Lair label. I just realised. Quite funny really.Very intense smelling wine with blueberry, vanilla, spice, sweet black licorice and blonde tobacco. On the palate, again, plenty of juicy blue and red fruit, spice, vanilla and tobacco with chalky fine tannins and clean fresh acid. Finishes dry with flavours of licorice root and spice. Lets not muck about, bistro or no bistro, pizza loving 30 something friends or pizza loving 20 something friends, it does not matter. This is an excellent wine and it delivers plenty at the price. If a bottle turned up at dinner my reaction on tasting a glass would be - ‘yeah, this is good, say when………………………………………………………..when!’Gary Walsh, Winorama
